What is a Chemical Health Assessment?

A Chemical Health Assessment (sometimes called Comprehensive Assessment, Substance Abuse Evaluation, or a Chemical Dependence Assessment) is a comprehensive clinical process that uses standardized assessment techniques to evaluate chemical dependency. This assessment is an important step toward diagnosing and treating substance use disorders. The result of the evaluation includes a detailed written report containing findings and recommendations.

The goal of a Chemical Health Assessment is threefold:

  1. Identify areas where treatment may be necessary
  2. Develop a comprehensive plan for recovery that focuses on the individual’s needs and goals
  3. Provide individuals with the clarity and direction they need to make informed decisions with confidence.

Who is a Chemical Health Assessment for?

  • Anyone 14+ can be assessed
  • Individuals with a DUI or a legal issue related to substance use
  • Individuals seeking diagnosis and recovery support

What happens during a Chemical Dependency Evaluation?

What to expect in a Chemical Health Assessment

The assessment is a 60-minute interview where a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) will meet one-on- one with the client, even if the client is a minor. The evaluation is a highly-structured, standardized assessment where an addiction specialized therapist will assess the client based on the six key dimensions of addiction based on the ASAM Criteria. This structure allows us to obtain comprehensive insights into a client’s needs, risks, and strengths to determine the appropriate level of care.

The evaluation is an interview and not a physical exam. There will be discussion around detailed questions and a review of your records (including medical, legal, or mental health records). Additionally, we will use assessment tools – standardized questionnaires and screening tools to gather information and determine the severity of any potential disorder or dependency.

How to prepare for a Chemical Dependency Evaluation

No preparation is required. Simply complete and turn in the intake paperwork at the agreed upon time prior to the appointment.

How does a Chemical Dependency Evaluation work?

STEP 1

Request a Chemical Dependency Evaluation by contacting us.

Anyone can request a Chemical Dependency Evaluation, but often this service is sought due to lawyer recommendation or court orders. Other times a concerned parent or family member may request this evaluation to determine the level of care needed for the individual, work toward a diagnosis, and obtain addiction recovery resources (if applicable).

Please note: The findings and recommendations provided in a Chemical Health Evaluation are NOT legally binding.

However, the judge may take the recommendations into account.

STEP 2

Complete paperwork prior to the assessment.

After your appointment is confirmed, we will send you some paperwork to complete before your evaluation. If necessary, we will verify the information provided by accessing collateral information, contacting the probation officer, or (in the case of minors) contacting the parents.

STEP 3

Attend the evaluation session.

The assessment is a 60-minute session where a licensed counselor will meet one-on-one with the client.

What happens after the evaluation?

Following the evaluation, the client will receive a written assessment of findings within 48 hours. The written assessment will include any applicable recommendations and resources for care.

Important: We send the assessment findings directly to the client. If the client prefers, we can send it directly to a judge or lawyer, but we always send it to the client FIRST.
